Something seriously wrong with this state of affairs!
(Source: 9gag)
As promised here’s the link to the review I wrote for the recent Bristol Comic Expo for Talk Comix (I took the photos as well). I promise a longer blog post at some stage this week, but 10 hours shifts are not good for my brain and I need to go lie down.
Enjoy!
Howdy to one and all. I hope that the British weather is not getting you all down too much (I will have a BBQ this year, even if I have to do it under an umbrella), here’s just a quick post to catch everyone up on my comings and goings.
- Bristol Comic Expo was last weekend and I enjoyed it immensely. I won’t be posting a review here as I’ve written one for Talk Comix, so I’ll post a link to that once it’s up. The only negative is that I seem to have caught a ‘Con Cold’ from shaking hands with so many people and generally breathing in pathogens from across the country. Fingers crossed it doesn’t develop into anything worse.
- With the artwork for issue one of Ryder now under construction (I’ll post some artwork previews on the Facebook page shortly) I’m turning my attention to the next Everlong Comics project, which is going to be an anthology piece. It’s still hush hush at the moment, but I’m really stoked about it despite the potential complexities of the task. Updates as and when, and any budding writers or artists out there are welcome to contact me at everlongcomics@hotmail.co.uk for details if they’d like to be involved.
- The horror film script is still sitting untouched due to a major pile up of social events from the past couple of weeks. Fingers crossed I’ll be meeting up with Andy P in the next few weeks to work on the comedy script, so I’ll run my ideas past him as well before I spend a couple of weekends tweaking things.
- This week’s ‘Pimp Post’ is about a TV show I have found myself growing steadily more fond of since the pilot, fantasy drama Once Upon A Time. This one was more Sarah’s choice than mine as I’m still recovering from the whole ‘Grimm’ experience (one of the worse written things I’ve ever had to watch), but I’m glad I’ve given it a chance. I like how the action jumps between the real world and the fairytale realm that the characters have been evicted from, and Robert Carlyle is awesomely creepy as Rumpelstiltskin. The show is on channel 5 on Sunday nights at 8pm, and I’d recommend giving it a go.
Cheers

Six weeks ago I was sat in a beer garden, sipping cider and talking shite with a friend with the sun on my back. How times have changed! All I can say is whoever stuck the whole country on hosepipe ban/drought watch needs to check his instruments again. Or step outside without an umbrella.
- Another week, another story submission accepted. It’s another horror short which has been picked up by Future Quake for one of their anthologies. No idea as of yet when it will be published, as ever once I know more I will let you know! I’m also pleased to announce that I will be writing for Talk Comix for the foreseeable future. I’ll be doing news, reviews and interviews (a lot of ‘ews’ there) for them, and my first two should be up shortly. Eli, the guy behind it all, is committed to building the site into THE first stop for anything comic related and has a ton of stuff planned, so I’m really pleased to be a part of it. Head on over and check the site out now, there’s plenty of content there already and a lot more is on the way. (http://www.talkcomix.com/)
- I’ve finally had some feedback through on my horror movie script. My proof reader/opinion machine Lauren is a very busy lady so I’m lucky to get anything at all from her, but she always finds the time to send me an email packed with ideas and suggestions. It will be nice to get back to the script as I haven’t touched it in about a month, and I’ve had a few other ideas in that time period that I want to work in. Next step will be to get my head down and really put some time in on it, so I expect I’ll have to dedicate a weekend to that soon.
- The new job continues to go well. We’ve finally (after three weeks of faffing about) started working on actual PPI claims which is quite interesting, so that should make the days go quicker. I’m starting to enjoy being in a routine, although my ability to peel myself off the pillow at 7am each morning is still lacking. If it wasn’t for the fact that Sarah is practically beating me out of the bed with a pillow every day I would probably have been sacked by now!
- I’ve also decided to add a little section in the blog to highlight anything I am playing/reading/watching and enjoying, so as to share cool things with you all. So on the weekend I downloaded the first ‘episode’ of the new Walking Dead game via Xbox Live. Based on the comics as opposed to the TV series, it’s a point and click style game with a few quick time events thrown in. Contrary to the slew of recent zombie games that give you a gun and tell you to go nuts, Walking Dead focuses on telling a story and letting you build relationships with characters that may pay off down the line. Some may turn their noses up at this, but when you’re forced to choose between saving a potentially useful ally and a small child things get fairly intense! I’m only an hour through and am really enjoying it so far, and with a further four episodes planned for release this is the ideal time to get on the band wagon.
- Finally a personal plea to you my loyal reader(s). If you enjoy reading my ramblings and would like to fuel my ego then might I request you sign up for a Tumblr account and follow me? It won’t take more than ten minutes and by increasing my follower total you are making sure my self worth continues to be sky high. And as a special incentive, the fifteen person to follow me will get a puppy*.
* - Actually puppy may be invisible. But it will be there, barking silently at you and following you around for the rest of your life. Promise.

Not a lot of people know this about me, but I actually only started reading comics seriously in the past three years. I had read a few Marvel and DC issues prior to this but the only series I really read from start to finish was Preacher (the book responsible for my fanboy worship of Garth Ennis). It wasn’t until I moved to Cardiff and realised I could walk to Forbidden Planet from my office in five minutes while on lunch that I started to get into the medium in a big way. In turn this lead to me to realise that I wanted to write the things, and the rest is geeky history.
So in the spirit of the top five I have decided to list the top five comic book series that I have discovered since moving to Cardiff. In the spirit of promoting stuff that might have slipped by you first time around I am omitting ongoing series (i.e The Walking Dead, The Boys) and anything that has been out for a while and is fairly well known (i.e. the great Batman graphic novels, The Crow, etc). If I were to list everything I have discovered and now love we would be here all night.
The Cape (Written by Joe Hill & Jason Ciaramella, Art by Zach Howard)
Based on the short story by horror writer and spawn of Stephen King, Joe Hill, The Cape was an Eisner winning one shot that was spun into a four issue mini series. I remember reading the first issue not long after I read the short story collection that Hill originally published the story in and being struck by how well Howard’s artwork matched the dark tone. The story of Eric and how he reacts when gifted with the power of flight is dark and original, with the first issue the best one shot I have ever read.
Screamland (Harold Sipe & Chris Sebela, Lee Leslie)
A five issue series from Image, Screamland focuses on a Hollywood where the monster movie stars of the past are actually monsters! Mixing satire, crime and horror elements the story follows werewolf Carl and scifi hasbeen Travis as they try to track down a sex tape that may be the final nail in the coffin of their respective careers, while trying to avoid the murderous impulses of a whole range of creeps and freaks. If you like your scares with a few laughs this is for you.
Skullkickers (Jim Zub, Edwin Huang)
When I first heard about this series I wasn’t really sold, and it took several recommendations before I finally relented and picked this up in trade. Having read it, I could only chastise myself for having taken so long to get to it! Following the exploits of two bounty hunters making their way through life in a faux-Lord of the Rings fantasy land, Skullkickers is hilarious, chaotic asskickery at its finest. Read it as soon as you get a chance.
Hack/Slash - My First Maniac (Tim Seeley, Daniel Leister)
I stumbled across this book one lunch break while browsing the new releases. I’d never heard of Hack/Slash before, but I flicked through and decided the artwork was cool enough to warrant a purchase. The story is a prequel, focusing on the early life of vigilante Cassie Hack and the first serial killer she ever took down. The story was good enough to encourage me to pick up the series from the beginning, and the artwork manages to toe the line between graphic and gratuitous (always a hard task these days).
Dexter’s Half Dozen (Jamie Lambert, Dave Clifford)
When I was making this list I felt I should include at least one independent, to show solidarity to my fellow struggling creators. Luckily for me, DHD is both a small press publication and one of my favourite books. Reading the first five issues back to back after buying them at my first con, and chatting to Jamie and Dave, was what inspired me to go down the self publishing route myself. Great artwork and a cracking story laced with black humour makes this an essential purchase for any comic fan.
So we’re six days into Operation: New Job and I’ve yet to get back into a proper sleep pattern. A hangover on the weekend probably didn’t help, but I’m hoping to be back to normal in the next month or so. The job is going well thus far, although my brain is struggling to contain all the information that is being poured into it. But the early finishes that come with any training period (1pm finish last Friday with a full day’s pay!) are helping to sooth the grey matter.
- My big news this week is that I’ve had a couple of short comics accepted into to publications that are due out late 2012/early 2013. One is an as-yet untitled horror comic which has got some awesome talent attached to it, and the other is an anthology with possibly the greatest title in the history of comics, The Psychedelic Journal of Time Travel. More details and links will be announced as the projects progress.
- The script for the long awaited issue one of Ryder has been given its final proof read and sent over to the glamorous Dave Powell so he can being putting pages and character designs down at the end of the month. We’re hoping for an Autumn 2012 release date for the book, and I am really excited to finally be getting this out there. Ryder is one of those stories that has been kicking about in my head for years and the prospect of telling this story is one of the reasons I decided to get into writing comics.
- What with the new job and various social functions that have been filling my calendar over the past few weeks I was shocked to realised that we are under a month away from the Bristol Comic Expo. Running over the 12th and 13th of May, the expo has a cracking line up of guests, exhibitors and exclusives that are sure to satiate even the most rabid of fanboys. Everlong Comics will have a small table at the event where you can pick up a copy of the first Ryder ashcan, as well as plenty of other goodies from artists Dave Powell and Kay Wilson.
- Finally a couple of bits of shameless promotion for some friends of mine. Firstly my buddy James Cook has released his first EP through his progressive metal project, Miroist. To paraphrase their website, Miroist match the intense grooves of djent and progressive metal with the deep ambient washes of post-rock, post-metal and electronica. The Ep, entitled The Pledge, is available to download now via Bandcamp (http://miroist.bandcamp.com/) and is pretty damn awesome. And for those of you who like their culture a little more stage based, that loveable rascal Andy Peart is starring in an understudy run of Zach Braff’s new play, All New People, tomorrow at the Dukes of York Theatre in London. Kick off (or whatever the theatrical equivalent) is at 2.30pm and entry is free. Free music and free theatre, what more could you ask for?!

After 2 months of watching Community in my pants, eating Subway and drinking cider in the sun I have finally started a new job this week. Being back into a normal person routine will not only sort out my bank balance but let me get back into a rhythm with my writing, as when you have unlimited free time and no deadlines the desire to write can occasionally get sidelined by other things (i.e. community, subway and cider).
In terms of writing I’ve been experimenting with short stories over the past few weeks. I fancied trying my hand at something a bit more ‘traditional’ and I’ve been reading some great horror novels recently, so I thought I’d give it a go. I’m going to post them online in the next few days, so I will throw up the links once they are out in Cyberspace.
I’ve finally got around to collecting the latest run of Ryder ashcans from the printers today, and they are looking good. For the sake of printing ease this run is A5 instead of A6, which means they look a little more like an actual comic as opposed to a tiny little mini book. The bulk of them will be available at the Bristol Comic Con on May 12th and 13th, and I’m hoping to get some into Comic Guru as well. Alternatively, head over to myebook and read the whole thing from the comfort of your own living room/bedroom/work cubicle/toilet. If you’re feeling especially generous, sign up to the site and give us a five star rating as well! (http://www.myebook.com/EverlongComics/)
